RBC Canadian Open: Bud Cauley claims first PGA Tour win in Canada as Matt Fitzpatrick finishes second

Matt Fitzpatrick missed out on more glory this year, despite making a final-day run at the RBC Canadian Open, as American Bud Cauley claimed his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Cauley, 36, claimed just his second win of a 15-year career as a professional at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, as he shot 65 on Sunday to hold off a number of big-name challengers including England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Norway's Viktor Hovland to finish at 17 under par.

There was a massive outpouring of emotion from Cauley and his family on the 18th green as he claimed his maiden win, and with good reason.

In June 2018, Cauley suffered five broken ribs, a broken left leg and a collapsed lung in a car crash in Dublin, Ohio. He returned to golf later that year but developed medical complications in September 2020 and did not play professionally again until a Korn Ferry Tour event in January 2024.

"Just how hard that was," he said, when asked what he was thinking about following his achievement. "Just so many people helped me get here and I'm just really thankful for all the help that I've gotten.

"Once I got the opportunity to start playing again I just told myself that I was going to try to just do everything the right way and give myself the best chance.

"I put my wife through so much during those dark times and it's just nice to have a little success as a kind of a thank you."

Fitzpatrick finished outright second, two shots off the winner after making an eagle at the 18th for a 64. Yet had it not been for Florida-native Cauley's nerve in the closing holes, then it could have been the European Ryder Cup star who would claim a fourth PGA Tour victory of the season.

"I would have taken it at the start of the week," Fitzpatrick said. "I felt like there was a lot of good stuff in there, just needed to have it come out. My putting was a little bit of a struggle last week and I feel like I got a bit of a better process for what I'm working on this week, and that showed today, I putted really solid."

Tommy Fleetwood was the leading Englishman heading into the final round, starting the day two shots behind clubhouse leader Jackson Suber.

As everyone else moved though, Fleetwood stayed still after birdieing the first and gave that shot back with a bogey on 11 before finishing even for the day in a tie for 11th at 11 under par, with Suber finishing a tie for fourth at 13 under.

Hovland took third in the end, shooting 65 to finish a shot ahead of Suber, Brice Garnett, Jimmy Stanger and Sweden's Jesper Svensson.

Cauley also claimed the first of three qualifying places for the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale thanks to his win.

Suber and Svensson received the two remaining spots thanks to their higher positions in the OWGR than Garnett and Stanger.
